A quiz about the guest of honor is one of the easiest birthday party activities to put together: guests guess their tastes, memories and quirks, and the birthday girl or guy reacts to every answer. Here are two ways to set it up, about forty questions sorted by theme and a few precautions so the surprise makes everyone happy, starting with the person you’re celebrating.

Two formats, depending on the surprise

Format 1: the guest of honor makes the quiz. A few days before the party, they create their ten-question quiz and send the link to the guests. Everyone plays on their own, and the leaderboard is revealed at the party, when the cake comes out. It’s the simplest version: zero prep for the organizer.

Format 2: the surprise quiz. The organizer writes the questions with help from one or two people who know the guest of honor well: a parent, a brother or sister, a childhood friend. On the big day, guests answer on paper in teams, then the guest of honor reveals the real answers. They find out what their loved ones know about them at the same time as everyone else.

Staging it on the big day

For a longer party with several rounds and teams, borrow ideas from the complete quiz night game plan.

Surprise, yes; embarrassment, no

A birthday quiz should make the guest of honor happy. Skip questions about an ex, their weight, their real age if they’d rather not say, or a hard period in their life. If you ask the family for stories, let them know the anecdotes will be read out in front of everyone.

Childhood photos and party videos call for the same tact. Ask before sharing the photos shown during the quiz, and let the guest of honor choose which ones appear. Once something is online, you can’t really take it back: as CISA, the US cybersecurity agency, puts it, there is no “delete” button on the internet, and even a post removed seconds later may already have been seen.

What about the noise?

A birthday party with a quiz, music and victory cheers can be heard through the walls. Noise rules depend on your city and your building, and many places have evening quiet hours, so a little courtesy goes a long way. A note in the lobby or a text to the neighbors the day before, letting them know about the party and roughly when it will wrap up, saves a lot of tension.
